This book focuses on weight loss for health and wellness. Since there are so many books out there on diets and exercise plans – we don’t want to deal too much with that. Most of us have already purchased books on diets or have even joined online dieting programs. Some of us succeed and others don’t. Many of us manage to lose some weight, keep it off for a while, and then slowly find ourselves gaining that weight back, plus more. That’s why we also want to focus on some of the reasons for this. How do our behaviors, attitudes and emotions play into weight gain, obesity, or at the other end of the spectrum, eating disorders?
The bottom line is that many of us will have a hard time succeeding in any long-term weight management program if we don’t understand what drives us to eat too much or too little. By now, we’re all familiar with the concept that in order to lose weight, we have to burn off more calories than we consume on a daily basis. However, many of us don’t have the time or the inclination to count every calorie, track every bit of movement, or both.
Weight management is not merely starving for a few days or engaging in a week-long plan to lose three or four pounds so that you can fit into that sleek pair of slacks or that bridesmaid’s dress. Those are temporary fixes that produce fast results. However, those results don’t last. Throughout this book, we want to provide information and strategies to help you manage your weight and your health long-term. We’ll talk about comfort eating and a few eating disorders and what causes them. We’ll talk about the impact that our environment and culture has on our eating habits and some eating disorders. We also want to explain the medical ramifications of weight gain and obesity as well as emotional issues that may lead to problems with long-term weight management.
We discuss symptoms of eating disorders so that you are aware of more serious aspects of weight management planning and show you ways that you can help someone else, or yourself, with weight management issues. We strive to provide you with the tools you need to succeed in long-term weight management goals. We’re not suggesting that these changes will happen overnight. While it’s important to make a decision to lead a healthier lifestyle, it’s also important to pace yourself. Set reasonable expectations and goals. If it took two years to put on that extra weight, you can’t expect to drop that weight in a few weeks.
For many of us, our lifestyles and the demands placed upon us have a direct relation to weight gain and obesity. Chances are, many of us will fail one or more times as we strive to develop healthier eating habits, exercise routines, and lifestyles that promote success in not only healthy weight loss, but management of our weight and health for the future.
Let’s face it. At one time or another, most of us experience weight gain, yo-yo dieting or successes and failures when it comes to maintaining weight long term. Many of us struggle through life with eating disorders that affect not only our weight, but our overall health and wellness. By taking a closer look at such issues, you will find that you – with dedication and diligence – find your ideal weight and reach for optimal health and wellness now and into the future.
